Thanks! I think you're right about reskinning too. Handing out a vicious shortsword etc and telling the player it's knuckledusters saves a lot of time, effort and is equally effective.

This is a fun idea! As someone who loves to play monks, this is helpful for those times when I wished I could be a reckless boxer. This is smart and clever!

Thankyou! I love a Monk too, but I really think there should be opportunities for other kinds of unarmed Fighters!

I've found that a lot reskinning makes the FEELof what one wants with unarmed combat possible. Just like the2014 DMG suggests making flails into nunchuku for your monks, instead making a brand new weapon, I get a lot of usage out of reskinning weapons into a cestus or gloves. This ties in easier to other classes as they count as melee weapon attacks. Players like to punch things, but they LOVE to Smite things with their fists if they are a paladin.

So I think your mastery idea has serious legs! By tying it to their masteries, it gives a great feeling of progression but keeps it under control as they can't master every weapon either. I think if you keep it all bludgeoning damage as well that provides the last bit of balance, as it's a pretty common resistance.

Now I am going to go watch Rocky 4 again...
