I started this journey looking for a simple box.
Although my love of ttrpgs stretches back several years, my addiction to miniatures is a far more recent development. My home group primarily plays online, so our annual in-person sessions have only amassed a small collection of little plastic figures. I also have one brother with a 3D printer and another with a paintbrush, meaning very few of the final minis have made their way into my possession.
That changed a few months ago when I started running D&D at my local game store. Playing once a month has sent my brother's 3D printer whirring, quickly amassing the small army that you see in the photos dotted through this article. Which leads us to the question of storage.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a nerd in possession of a new hobby, must be in want of as many related toys as possible.
My paintbrush-wielding brother told me that the best solution for storage involved magnets, which sent me down a rabbit hole of research. After discovering an overwhelming world of magnet sheets, really useful boxes and drilling magnet shaped holes, I was pleased to find the War Mag website.
This isn't a sponsored post (oh, to live in a world where that was a possibility), but I really like this product, and I think you will too.
War Mag sells the entire kit of parts to create magnetised miniature storage. My bundle came with a box (and divider tray) and two self-adhesive magnetised sheets to stick to the bottoms of the box and tray, then I selected my choice of self-adhesive magnets that stick to the bottom of the miniatures.
Everything is customisable, from the colour and sizes of the boxes, to the designs of the magnet sheets, with a wide range of magnets for almost every size and shape of miniature.
The magnets might not feel particularly strong, but they are more than ample for every miniature I've tested so far, even surviving my “oopsy-daisy” test in this video.
Price-wise, it's not the cheapest option, but far from ruinously expensive either. I priced up buying all the separate elements and I might have saved some money, but not the time, effort or overall finish that comes from this system. The fact that everything is cut and measured to fit is hugely appealing, and meant my entire collection was stuck and ready to travel in less than 30 minutes.
I was hopeful when I ordered the bundle from War Mag, but I'm delighted with the results. Check them our here, and if you decide to treat yourself to a box or two, let them know I sent you. Maybe I'll get that sponsorship deal someday…
I followed the link and I saw a picture of someone using a magnetic box for their paints!!! Genius!
This looks like a better solution than my old sponge foam cases! No wear from travel on the minis’ sealing coats!
If I start playing with minis again I’ll check this out!
